Puri: The Puri coast has come under massive air and maritime security blanket to ensure the safety of lakhs of devotees during the annual Rath Yatra in the pilgrim town, Paradip Coast Guard officials said here today.
The sea-route security patrol and air surveillance is underway close to Puri coast. The nine-day festival began today has attracted lakhs of devotees in the pilgrim town to witness the annual festival. The coast guard has geared up to step up its coastal safety mechanism, the official said.
Coast guard ships and aircraft were pressed into service in a multi-layers security cover off the Puri coast for the Rath Yatra. Both air and coastal surveillance is continuing up to 50 nautical miles off the Puri coast, he said.
The air surveillance is being maintained from a dronnier aircraft over the pilgrim town. Two Coast Guard ships have been deployed for round-the-clock patrolling to avert possible sea-route subversive ploy.
The coast guard is acting in cohesion with marine wing of Odisha police for shallow water patrolling, CG sources added.
A senior official of Odisha police said apart from state police, the Rapid Action Force, bomb disposal squads are on the the job to avert untoward occurrences.
