Berhampur: Two police officials were injured following in an encounter with armed gangsters during wee hours today in Sadar police station jurisdiction in Odisha’s Ganjam district.
The history-sheeters lobbed two bombs and fired two rounds at the patrol squad near Jhadakili orchard. Sadar police station inspector Shiba Shankar Mohapatra and sub inspector Surya Chandra Padhi were injured as bombs hurled by the bomb throwing.
In retaliation, the patrol squad fired at the criminal duo with one of them grievously injured following the encounter.
- Mohan Rao sustained bullets wounds on both his legs while his accomplice managed to flee. Rao, who is facing trial in as many as 17 criminal cases, has been hospitalized and is out of danger, police said.
Since past one year, Ganjam district, which has become a hub of armed lawbreakers, has witnessed as many as 42 cases of gun battles involving police forces and anti-socials.
The history-sheeter Rao had opened fire at the police team which later retaliated. The gun battle lasted for about 5 minutes. An improvised mouser besides a live cartridge and two bombs was seized from the possession of the accused.
Police were in search of Rao, who was wanted in a series of daring crimes. He had single-handedly mobilized a crime syndicate and had unleashed lawlessness.
On a tip-off, police had conducted a raid at his hideout when the criminal suddenly opened fire. Police retaliated in self-defence, police said.
The continuing crackdown on lawbreakers has come in the wake of fast-deteriorating law and order situation in various parts of the district. The failure on part of law-enforcing agencies in curbing the lawlessness has been triggering public resentment.
