Kendrapara: The police on Sunday arrested two cyber-savvy youths who had uploaded objectionable video of a college student on social media platforms and had made it viral.
The arrested youths- Soumya Ranjan Behera, Tapas Rana- had stealthily photographed the minor girl, a student of a local polytechnic college. Both tried to blackmail the victim and asked sexual favour from her. They had threatened the victim to upload the nude video on social media network. As the victim had refused to fall into their trap, the accused persons had made the video viral on social media platform, said Inspector Derabish Police Station, Sudhir Sahu.
Police probed the matter following the complaint lodged by the victim girl. The cyber crime wing of state police assisted us in the investigation. After prima facie was found, the accused youths, both aged 20, were arrested today. Both during interrogation confessed to the crime.
They have been booked under 292 (representation of person or any other object in obscene manner), 294 (obscene act), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt),506 (criminal intimidation), 509 (gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), the protection of children from sexual offence act, 2012, Information Technology Act, 200, section- 67 and 67 (a).
As directed by state police headquarters, the district police are maintaining zero tolerance in cases of obscene photos or videos going viral on social media. Mahakalpada police have received a similar complaint today from a woman whose objectionable photos have gone viral on social media platform. Police have registered a case and have begun a probe into the complaint, said Sub Divisional Police Officer, Rajib Lochan Panda.
