Bhubaneswar: With flood situation going from bad to worse in the worst affected Ganjam and Gajapati districts, Odisha government today urged upon the Vishakhapatnam naval base to airlift people in marooned areas.
The navy has been called upon to assist the government in this distressing hour. They have responded promptly and would soon deploy two choppers to airlift the people stranded on rooftops in Purussottampur and Aska block of Ganjam districts, said Special Relief Commissioner Office sources.
Almost whole areas of Aska and Purussottampur block have turned into an ocean of water. With communication links cut off from the outer world, the flood victims are left to fend themselves with no sight of relief and rescue agencies.
Cry for relief grows louder in villages engulfed in vast sheet of flood waters with an estimated 50,000 still left marooned.
The government agencies are still caught napping even as operation to provide relief and evacuate the stranded people has failed to make progress in marooned villages.
“We had got ourselves prepared to face the exigency. But it really pains us to describe that government machinery is yet to reach us. We are left to fend ourselves. The marooned people are yet to receive a grain of relief as yet”, bemoaned the flood victims.
