Phulbani : A Former Biju Janata Dal (BJD) legislator from Phulbani assembly constituency was arrested today Kandhamal district on the charge of outraging the modesty of a woman on September 3.
The accused Debendra Kanhar, who represented Phulbani assembly seat from 2009 to 2014, was arrested from Ichapuram area in Andhra Pradesh.
Kanhar had allegedly barged into the victim’s house on September 2 and had beat her up and had outraged her modesty, according to the complaint that was lodged in this connection.
The ex-lawmaker was arrested under IPC sections 451 (House-trespass), 294 (obscene act), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 354 (molestation), 506 (criminal intimidation), police said.
The alleged sexual escapade of former BJD MLA and rise in crime against women had earlier led the BJP Mahila Morcha to stage Kandhamal shutdown on September 28 last.
