Bhubaneswar: In the largest seizure of contraband in recent past, nearly one ton of ganja worth Rs 1.5 crore was seized today near crowded Khandagiri traffic junction in the city by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) personnel.
The DRI personnel acting on a tip off intercepted a truck and swopped on the contraband. The driver of the vehicle has been detained to ascertain his role in the ganja smuggling racket.
The banned substances stashed in packets of dress materials and other consumers goods were being smuggled to escape detection, the DRI sleuths said.
The state is fast emerging as a major hemp (ganja) production and smuggling hub. The districts which witnesses hemp cultivation are Angul, Deogarh, Sambalpur, Rayagada, Boudh, Gajapati, Malkangiri, Kandhamal and Nayagarh districts.
