Puri: Paying fitting tribute to Utkalmani Gopabadhu Das on his 141st birth anniversary, Chief Minister Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik today laid foundation stone for Odia University at “Bakula Bana” (bakul forest) under Satyabadi block of Puri district.
Five iconic leaders of Odisha- Pandit Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das, Pandit Krupasindhu Mishra, Acharya Harihar Das, Pandit Godavarish Mishra and Pandit Nilakantha Das- had founded the unique education system at the Bakul Bana with students being taught in natural environs.
The university was the long-felt demand of all Odia speaking people. It will go a long way in propagating and promoting Odia language which was accorded “classical language’’ tag in 2016, Patnaik said.
The university will offer PG courses in Odia language and literature. Besides it will facilitate research work on Odia language.
The move to set up Odia University at Satyabadi is a fitting tribute to freedom fighter Utkalmani Gopabandhu Das, who had championed the cause of spread of education and Odia language in the State.
The great freedom fighter had established an iconic Bakul Bana school at Satyabadi in 1909, which had churned out outstanding personalities in various spheres. So the place deserved the first choice for the proposed university.
