New Delhi: M. Karunanidhi, chief of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), who made milestones in South India’s politics, is in poor health condition. Karunanidhi is admitted to ICU of Kaveri Hospital in Chennai. At the same time there has been a huge crowd of supporters outside the hospital, due to which security has increased.

Actually, on June 3, Karunanidhi has celebrated his 94th birthday. On July 26, exactly 50 years ago, he took the command of the DMK. Karunanidhi has also a record of not losing his seat in every election. He has been the Chief Minister five times and the Assembly member 12 times. He has always won the seat in which he has contested. Karunanidhi assumed the position of Chief Minister of the state for the first time in 1969 and last in 2003.

Known for loyalty with DMK

M Karunanidhi is known for his loyalty to the DMK. There is a story that justifies loyalty towards to his party. Indeed, there was a time in Karunanidhi’s life when his first wife Padmavati was on death bed, but he went to the party meeting instead of staying with them. His move made him very popular among party workers and his height in the party increased considerably.

House turn to Museum

A successful writer, poet, thinker and speaker M. Karunanidhi is one of the senior leaders of India. Karunanidhi is away from active politics for almost a year because of old age diseases. His childhood name was Dakshinamurthy. The childhood home of Karunanidhi in Thirukkavallai village, was turned into a museum. He was born in this house in 1924.

Join politics at the age of 14

Only after leaving education at the age of 14, Karunanidhi came out on a successful political career. While being vocal about the Hindi protests in South India, Karunanidhi took a plaque of ‘Hindi-hatao Movement’. In 1937, a large number of youths protested against making Hindi mandatory in schools, Karunanidhi was also one of them. After this, he made his own weapon in Tamil language and started writing scripts for dramas, newspapers and films in Tamil itself.

Seeing his excellent speech style, Periyar and Annadurai made him the editor of ‘Kudiyarasu’. However, due to differences between Periyar and Annadurai, and after the separation of the two, they associated with Annadurai. After this he did not looked back. In 1957, he became the MLA for the first time. Apart from this, 12 other people from the party also became MLAs. Karunanidhi sweated heavily in the field of politics and in the 1967 elections, the party achieved majority and Annadurai became the first non-Congress Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. After the DMK came to power, the condition of the Congress in Tamil Nadu was such that till today, there remained only as a partner.

Five times Chief Minister

When Karunanidhi became MLA in 1957, Jawaharlal Nehru was in the seat of the Prime Minister’s chair at the center. When Karunanidhi became CM for the first time, Indira Gandhi was in charge of the country’s PM’s chair. Be aware that on the basis of the recommendations of the commission to investigate allegations of corruption during the Emergency, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi sacked Karunanidhi’s government. After this Karunanidhi became CM for the third time. At that time Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister. For the fourth time he became CM than PV Narasimha Rao was PM and for the fifth time Manmohan Singh tenure.

.. When the split in the DMK

A turn came in Tamil Nadu’s politics when the DMK split and it split into two parties. After this partition, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) founded in 1972.

Later, in 1999, Karunanidhi entered into an alliance with BJP-led NDA and formed the coalition. However, Karunanidhi later became a part of the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government leaving the BJP. Currently his son MK Stalin is the acting president of DMK, the main opposition party in Tamil Nadu.

Three weddings, 4 sons and 2 daughters

Karunanidhi has done three marriages His first wife Padmavati, second wife Dayalu Ammal and the third wife are Rajati Ammal. Padmavati has passed away, whereas Dayalu and Rajati are alive.

Speech given in Malaysia

At the Third World Tamil Conference in Paris (France) in 1970, he gave a special speech at the inaugural ceremony. He also gave an inaugural speech in the sixth world Tamil conference in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) in 1987. The official theme song of the World Classical Tamil Conference in 2010 was written by M. Karunanidhi, whose tune was prepared by AR Rahman.

Raised question on Ram Setu

In response to the Sethusamudram dispute, Karunanidhi questioned the existence of Hindu Lord Sri Ram. He said, “People say that there was a man 17 million years ago, whose name was Rama. Who are they? Is there any proof of this?

Support LTTE

In the interim report of the Justice Jain Commission investigating the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, Karunanidhi was accused of promoting the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). In the interim report it was recommended that for promoting the assassins of Rajiv Gandhi, then the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and the DMK Party are to be held responsible.

Also got arrested

In 2001, Karunanidhi, former Chief Secretary, K.A. Nambir and many others were arrested in Chennai on charges of corruption in making flyovers.

Promote dynasty

Opponents of Karunanidhi, some members of his party and other political observers had also accused Karunanidhi of promoting dynasty and initiating a political lineage like the Nehru-Gandhi family. However, on being found guilty of doing wrong, he had also removed his two other sons MK Muthu and MK Alagiri from the party. Similarly, Dayanidhi Maran was removed from the post of Union minister.
