Jagatsinghpur: A 30-year-old man was taken into custody today for launching brutal acid attack upon his spouse, baby daughter and mother-in-law.

The accused Manas Swain, a cab driver, was arrested from Nirakarpur area in Puri district. Marital discord was ascertained as the motive of the crime, police said.

The accused fled after committing the crime under the cover of darkness on March 10 evening hours. Those who sustained injuries following acid attack are mother-in-law Shantilata Samal (48), spouse Swarnalata Samal and his 18-month-old daughter, said Inspector Tirtol police station, Balram Nayak.

The victims were there at their house in Bhaliapatana village under Kujang police station jurisdiction when acid attack was made on them.

The accused Swain, a native of Kakatpur in Puri district, had targeted his wife Swarnalata. However mother-in-law and daughter sustained wounds as they came on the way.

The accused had barged into the house and had exchange of words with wife and mother-in-law. Then all on a sudden, he uncorked the bottle and threw acid at them. The accused had targeted his spouse Swarnalata. However his mother-in-law with the baby in tow had tried to protect Swarnalata and became acid attack victim.

As they screamed and cried for help, the accused Manas swiftly had fled away in the motorcycle. Locals chased and tried to nab him, but to no avail, police said.

Manas who had got married to Swarnalata two-and-a-half year back had strained relationship. His spouse was living separately along with baby daughter in parents’ house. Manas had sought divorce in family court and had prayed the court for guardianship of the baby daughter, police added.

It’s pertinent to note here that acid attack on a college girl in Jagatsinghpur district had hit the headlines with police arresting the attacker, an army man, on November last year.

Pramodini Roul was the victim of concentrated nitric acid attack on May 4, 2009. Roul, then plus two arts students in Tirtol College, had sustained horrific facial scarring after acid attack. She had turned fully visually impaired. The state government had also placed under suspension two police officials of Jagatsinhpur district on the charge of inept handling of Pramodini Roul acid attack case.
