Bhubaneswar: With enforcement agencies intercepting ganja smugglers almost on a daily basis, the State is poised to become a major hub of inter-state drug traffickers.
In separate interceptions, a joint squad of police and excise personnel today made a seizure of over 1.5 quintals of hemp in Malkangiri and Kandhamal district and arrested six smugglers including two from neighbouring West Bengal.
The State, according to Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) sources, accounted for the 40 per cent of total ganja seizures across the country since past one year. The large quantity of seizure has apparently put Odisha on the pedestal of country’s largest ganja producing state on the national level.
The contraband makes it way to both southern and northern states with a well-oiled racket of middlemen. The contraband is smuggled to various destinations either by road or rail.
Since past one month, 23 cases of seizure of contraband substances have come to light in several parts of the state.
Allegations however continue to fly thick and fast that this money-minting contraband trade flourish mainly in southern district following both overt and covert patronage of enforcing agencies.
