Bhubaneswar: In separate encounters involving police and criminals, two policemen were injured while equal numbers of hardcore criminals were injured in gun battles in comissionerate police and Tangi police station areas.
A couple of policemen of a special squad of Nirakarpur and Tangi police were injured as a history-sheeter opened fire at them while the cops were on chase to nab him.
The cops later shot at the lawbreaker identified as Jamshed Khan in self defence and managed to overpower him. Khan with a history of crime was injured during the encounter and is hospitalized. He is stated to be out of danger. The injured policemen are undergoing treatment at a government-run hospital and they are also stated to be out of danger, police said.
In another shootout in Kalinga Nagar K-7 area on the outskirts of the city, police resorted to open fire at a wanted criminal- Sushant Majhi. The criminals wanted in a series of criminal cases including daring Rs 56 lakh daring robbery in Tangi police station area shot at the police squad who later retaliated with gunshots, police said.
A 99 mm unlicensed pistol besides five rounds of cartridges were recovered from his possession. This is the sixth encounter by the commissionerate police in the recent months after a series of daylight robbery, snatching and loot incidents had rocked the State’s bustling capital city in recent months.
