Bhubaneswar: The private bus operators today went ahead with their strike, completely paralyzing the public transport system.
Private bus service is incidentally the lifeline of public transport network in the state. 17,000 private buses ply across various routes while the state-run Odisha state road transport corporation (OSRTC) buses mostly cover traverse through the commercially less-viable routes in tribal districts in western and northern districts.
It’s pertinent to note here that the All Odisha Bus Owners’ Association, the umbrella body of private bus owners, had announced the strike call on Tuesday demanding fulfilment of their charter of demands. The state government’s talk with the bus operators had failed to yield any result yesterday.
Among other things, the association has been demanding a separate policy for the city bus service. The association members said that though the city bus service was meant to ply within the cities, the buses have started plying on the state highways and national highways.
