Bhubaneswar: Reiterating that dispute over water Mahanadi is sub-judice, the state government today called upon the Chhattisgarh Government to put brakes on any form of construction activities on Mahanadi River.

“Your Department has invited bids for construction of Mohmela Sirpur barrage and all appurtenant works including operation and maintenance for 2 years on Mahanadi river in Arang Taluka of Raipur district.”, Pradip Jena, secretary water resources said in a letter drafted to Chattishgarh government.

“Moreover, it is pertinent to mention that honourable National Green Tribunal, eastern Zone Bench, Kolkata in its order dated 26-07-2017 had categorically asked the state of Chhattisgarh not to proceed with the execution activities of dams and barrages which have not yet been taken up,”, he said.

The Union Water Resources Ministry on March 12 had issued a notification, constituting three-member ‘Mahanadi Water Disputes Tribunal’ to adjudicate the dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh over sharing the river’s water.

The Mahanadi water dispute has snowballed into a major political issue in Odisha with the assembly being adjourned several times since past week. After a weeklong impasse, the ruling and opposition MLAs today sat together to bring about a consensus over the emotive water issue.
