Bhubaneswar: In the latest instance of man-animal conflict, a wild elephant trampled to death a 42-year-old farmer in a forest-side village of Odisha’s Khurda district.
The incident occurred yesterday evening in Samantaraipur village under Tangi forest range. The mutilated body of the victim identified as Bitra Rout was spotted in the forests on the fringes of the village.
The village where tragic death was reported is close to elephants’ habitation corridor. The animals stray into the village to devour the crop field, which leads to frequent outbreak of man-elephant conflict.
The next kin of the bereaved family is being covered Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia financial aid as per rule prescribed for human death due to attack by protected animals, added the forest officials.
