Govt Likely To Announce Rs 2.3 Trillion Economic Stimulus Package Soon

New Delhi: With all eyes on Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the wake of possible financial crisis amid Coronavirus outbreak in the country, Finance Ministry is most likely to announce an economic stimulus package of more than Rs 1.5 trillion to fight the downturn.

According to a report by news agency Reuters, though the Central government has not yet finalised the package, discussions are ongoing between Prime Minister Office (PMO), the Finance Ministry and Reserve Bank of India (RBI). One of the sources, a senior government official told the news agency that the stimulus plan could be as large as Rs 2.3 trillion, but final numbers were still in discussion. “The package, which could be announced by the end of the week, will be used to put money directly into the accounts of more than 100 million poor and to support businesses hit the hardest by the lockdown,” Reuters quoted the sources as saying.
