Lanjigarh : Hustle and bustle in Lanjigarh industrial town in Odisha’s Kalahandi district has come to a standstill on Monday even as violent clash between the local residents and security forces resulting in death of two persons.
Security ring has been thrown open the town which is home to Vedanta Alumina refinery plant.
Locals who were seeking employment in the industrial unit allegedly went berserk and tried to barge into the plant, leading to the eruption of clash.
A sub Inspector of Odisha Industrial Security Force (OISF), Sujeet Kumar Minz and a protestor-Dani Batra (45) died following the clash.
50 other protestors were reported to have been injured at the troubled spot as Odisha Industrial Security Force (OISF) personnel allegedly went on rampage and caned the group of protesters.
Following the death of the one of the protestors, the mob comprising the local job seekers allegedly went on rampage killing the OISF personnel Minz.
Tension has mounted up at the industrial town promoting the authorities to clamp prohibotory order under Section-144, Cr PC. Agitated people have blocked various roads leading to the plant. Police forces have rushed to the spot. Situation is exceedingly tense. We are trying to avert possible show of violence by local residents. Apart from State police, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is deployed to avert possible eruption of further violence, said police officials.
The residents of Rangopalli in close proximity of the refinery plant had staged peaceful protest by squatting in front of the plant to press forth their employment demand when the incident took place.
The OISF forces unleashed brutality on people without prior provocation, the protestors alleged.
However the security personnel differed from protestors’ version.
“Our staffs were brutally attacked by the agitators. The agitators attacked us and pelted stones. They were extremely violent and despite several attempts by the OISF personnel. We tried to calm them down to diffuse the situation. One of our staffs was killed in the mob violence”,
